Latent Grains 20
At first glance , Latent Grains 20 appears calm, almost contemplative. A dark blue dominates the upper part of the image, above it a violet shimmer, and below it a gently rising zone of green, yellow, orange, and red. The colors don't seem to exist side by side, but rather to support one another—as if they were layers of a slow, inner breath.
Within the context of the series, this work marks a moment of calm. The transitions are less dramatic, less eruptive than in other pieces. Instead, a horizontal dialogue unfolds: depth and coolness above, warmth and grounding below. This structure evokes landscapes without ever becoming concrete—a horizon without a place.
It is precisely here that the logic of AI becomes particularly evident. The same prompt doesn't produce a repetition, but rather a new balance. Latent Grains 20 is the result of minimal shifts in weighting, color density, and transition speed. The machine doesn't "decide," it varies—and therein lies its productive strangeness.
In line with Japanese thought, the image can also be interpreted as a state, not an object: a fleeting equilibrium that exists only for a moment. Taketo Muroi doesn't use this characteristic of AI to demonstrate control, but rather to consciously dissolve it. Latent Grains 20 is not a conclusion, but a silent intermediate state—a visual pause within an endless space of possibility.
