Merzmensch – Artificial Memories 04

A house that was not built.
A place that no one knows – and yet many seem to remember.

Artificial-Memories-04 is a digital mirage with a strangely familiar atmosphere. The architecture appears European, almost Alpine—but it is twisted, shifted, and floating. The image is reminiscent of a yellowed photograph from the family archive—taken in a 1970s summer that never happened.

In the series MERZmory, Merzmensch explores those moments of collective memory that are reassembled by AI. The images are not the result of a documentary gaze, but of algorithmic nostalgia: The machine hallucinates places because it has learned what memories look like visually—without ever having experienced them.

The work thus oscillates between photography, dream image, and malfunction. It demonstrates how much our concept of "reality" has long been a media construction—fed by images that are never true, but are deeply rooted.

Like an echo from a parallel archive , Artificial-Memories-04 appears melancholic, quiet, and otherworldly. It's not the past that's being reconstructed here—but our relationship to it.
