Clint Enns – Self-Care

An old man pushes his shopping cart, but instead of bread, milk, or medicine, it's overflowing with ice cream cones. The scene seems both grotesque and tender: the excess of pastel balls, the ridiculous impracticality, the decrepit body clinging to the illusion of sweet consolation.

"Self-care" isn't a wellness slogan here, but a bitter commentary on consumption and compensation. The image speaks of absurd simultaneity: the deterioration of the body meets the infantilized luxury of excess. Enns exaggerates the gesture of self-indulgence to the point of grotesqueness – and shows how caring gestures in capitalism degenerate into mere filling, stuffing, and buying. The man doesn't seem redeemed, but grotesquely trapped in his burden of melted food and sugar – a clownish monument to failure in the age of self-optimization.
