Clint Enns – Masking Your Feelings

A young woman sits on the floor, half-hidden behind an oversized mask. The face, made of plaster or plastic, appears expressive yet empty, a monumental projection of emotion removed from the real figure. What remains is the discrepancy between the inner experience and the outward image.

Here, Enns addresses the impossibility of authentically visualizing emotions. The mask, larger than the person himself, takes over the field of representation—it is smoother, clearer, more "readable" than the real face. But this is precisely where the oppressiveness lies: the staging displaces the subject, and expression becomes a shell.

The work is not only a reflection on identity and self-concealment, but also on our visual culture: We live in a world in which the mask – the profile, the pose, the role – has long since replaced the person.
