Clint Enns – Man Losing His Shirt
A man stands lost in the neon lights of the casino, his shirt missing, his jeans half-open, a last dollar bill in his hand. The title, "Man Losing His Shirt," is ambiguous: It refers to the literal loss of the garment, but also to the economic catastrophe that finds its banal expression in gambling.
Enns doesn't depict a glamorous casino world, but rather a stage of exhaustion. His body is drawn, haggard, his gaze lowered—a portrait of futility. Behind him, the slot machines blink tirelessly, symbols of an industry that thrives on the endless cycle of hope and loss.
The image functions as an allegory: not only of the gambler who “loses his shirt,” but also of a society that is prepared to put everything on the line – and thereby gamble away its dignity.
