Clint Enns – Geriatric Ward Conversation
Two elderly people sit side by side on a worn sofa, amidst the quiet setting of a retirement home. The scene would be banal – were it not for the grotesque detail: The man has an oversized plastic denture in his mouth, while the woman reacts to him with wide-open eyes. Surprise, absurdity, a spark of humor – and at the same time, a faint shudder.
Clint Enns' Geriatric Ward Conversation plays with the boundaries of dignity and ridiculousness, memory and decay. The gesture is childish, almost slapstick, yet the setting remains serious, almost clinical. The AI here brings together two levels that rarely coexist: the comedy of improvisation and the tragedy of old age.
It's an image that makes the viewer laugh—and at the same time recoil in shame. Perhaps that's precisely the truth of old age in the 21st century: that humor remains the last form of resistance.
