A man in a white shirt stands with his back to the viewer, alone in a landscape of rubble. Cardboard boxes, paper, plastic parts, bodies—or merely their dummies—lie scattered on the asphalt. The sky is a pristine blue, almost idyllic, while the earth sinks into chaos.

Clint Enns' Box Store Manager, Nightmare evokes the afterimage of an American dream turned into a nightmare. The anonymous manager, symbol of a consumer culture, gazes upon the ruins he himself may have helped to create: a place where abundance and emptiness become indistinguishable.

The scene is both absurd and oppressive. It depicts the coexistence of order and neglect, of standardization and decay. The image asks: What remains of a culture that produces everything in excess—other than a no-man's-land of waste and lost figures?
