Boris Eldagsen – Treatment

Treatment takes the medical metaphor, which runs through Pseudomnesia I , to its existential tipping point. A body lies motionless in bed, the face bandaged, the gaze—if it still exists—offended. The light falls harshly through the window frame, which inevitably evokes religious and institutional symbolism. Healing, control, and redemption intertwine in a single, ambivalent gesture.

The AI doesn't generate a dramatic event here, but rather a state of being at the mercy of others. Everything appears photographically accurate—perspective, materiality, light—and yet the scene itself is inherently unstable. The body seems simultaneously treated and erased, protected and anonymized. This very limbo is crucial. Eldagsen doesn't use AI to imitate reality, but to dissect its visual authority.

Treatment is not a document of medical care, but an image about the promise of repair. Photography, once a medium of visualization, becomes here the surface of an intervention whose purpose remains unclear. As the "gravedigger of photography," Eldagsen shows that AI can generate images that look like evidence, but which now only negotiate states of being: power, dependence, and the tacit agreement to be seen without being understood.
