Boris Eldagsen – Flashback
Flashback stages memory as a fragile, media-mediated act. Two figures appear absorbed in a shared moment, yet their relationship remains unclear: closeness and distance overlap, gestures seem frozen, as if belonging to different time periods. Light reflections, overexposure, and visual disturbances permeate the image, creating the impression of a damaged negative—or of a memory that is blurring itself.
It is precisely here that AI unfolds its specific capabilities. It does not reconstruct a past moment, but rather simulates its aesthetic symptoms: blurriness, fragmentation, temporal displacement. Flashback is not a retrospective view, but a construction of memory as visual fiction. Photography becomes the stage for an inner film whose logic is not narrative, but affective.
Eldagsen uses AI to deliberately sabotage the photographic illusion of immediacy. The image asserts a past, yet refuses any clear location. As the "gravedigger of photography," he demonstrates that in the AI age, images of memory no longer bear witness, but rather create. Flashback reveals that photography is less a repository of the past than an instrument for its constant reinvention.
