Boris Eldagsen – Eternity
Eternity is a key work within Boris Eldagsen's Pseudomnesia I series and exemplifies his radical questioning of photographic truth. The image initially evokes the aesthetics of a historical snapshot: graininess, lighting, and staging allude to a supposedly analog heritage. But this familiarity quickly tips into the uncanny. The scene appears simultaneously intimate and grotesque, realistic and impossible—a visual paradox that defies any documentary interpretation.
Eldagsen uses AI here not as a tool for perfection, but for disruption. The artificial intelligence doesn't create a memory, but a pseudo-memory: an image that feels like a found object from the past, without ever having existed. This is precisely where its explosive power lies. Eternity demonstrates that AI can produce images that are photographically "credible" without referencing a real event.
By depriving photography of its central function—testimony—Eldagsen declares himself the “gravedigger of photography.” But this death is productive: it opens a space in which photography is no longer proof, but assertion. Eternity shows what photography can achieve in the age of AI—not representation, but reflection on truth, memory, and the power of images themselves.
